I am about to build the roost for my chick coop and I am planning a flat roost will several "polls". I have about 10'X 4.5" to work with. Is that enough space for 42 chickens? I can't remember the spacing for the chickens (I think it is 10" right to left) but the distance between polls, I don't remember. I know they should be far enough apart so the chickens won't peck at each other.

Your help would be great appreciated. I am going to tackle the roost tomorrow (I hope).

Here is what "Storey's guide to raising chickens" says:

The perch for a regular-sized checken should be about 2 inches across. Allow 8-10 in of perching space for each bird. Place roosts 2 ft above the floor and at least 18 inches apart. If floor space is limited, step-stair roosts 12 inches apart vertically and horizonally so chickens can easily hop from lower to higher rungs.
