I agree with the wire apron, and find a good watch dog even chicken wire isn't really safe from predators, a chicken is a chicken hen or roo and if you get 1 that will really protect the hens your going to be looking at 1 that your afraid of too.

I know this is an old post but I had a racoon break into a pen I had my rooster in giving the hens a break from breeding. The roo managed to chase off the coon. He did loose some of his comb in the fight and blood of course but no severe damage. I haven't had any break ins in a long time. Luckily i've never had any losses since I got chickens again about 15 years ago. My losses have been from outside the pen with the chickens and eggs being taken by snakes.A good one will try, but mostly they keep a look out and give a warning. A rooster is still just a chicken and no match for a chicken eating predator. A secure coop and run is the best thing to protect your flock.
