Rye Grass & Flock

My chickens do not free range but have a large coop with access to a fenced outside area Of course nothing can grow there I scratched up the dirt and sprinkled rye grass seed in the area The chickens have not been able to go out and the grass is growing very well All of a sudden I have the bright idea to do some research on this There are pros and cons I just need to know if it is safe for them to eat the grass before I let them out

It's "safe" but they will scratch up and kill a lot more of it than they will eat
