Hey all,

We noticed our Silkie roo has some rather large scales on his legs that just don't seem right. Photos are attached. What do you think?

He's got these massively thick lower legs, and in a few areas the scales seem to be sorta bent away from the leg. It's not all the scales, but some of them.

You may notice some blood in one of the photos. That was the signal that we needed to look at him - he had broken a foot feather...

Thank you!

Could potentially be SLM or old damages scales from a previous case.

Wouldn't hurt to treat for it either way.

He hasn't had a previous case that we're aware of. He is 3.5 years old and has always been healthy. We examine all the birds every month or two, but we didn't give much concern to the leg scales as they didn't look like this a couple of months ago. He doesn't hobble or limp in any way either.

We're just not to crazy about vaseline all over his legs with so many feathers on them... :-|

There are other ways to treat. Since he's never had them in the past, I would say that he's starting to get them now. I would not leave him untreated. Do a site search for Scaly Leg Mite Treatment.
