My neighbor came over and excitedly explained that one of my 9 month old hens had caught a snake. So I went to investigate. She had caught a gardner snake of about 16 inches in length and was thrashing it about. After about 3 minutes she had it killed enough to eat and I thought she would tear off small pieces but no... she swallowed the thing whole!

I'm proud of her...

I don't kill gardner snakes because they are helpful but if one is caught by a chicken it is a free meal.

When my first girls were just 1/2 grown, I saw one of them with something and upon closer inspection discovered a baby snake...it was gone before I could figure out WHAT kind of snake it was. Extra high protein snack, I guess

I have heard of some breeds of chickens (Buckeyes)which will kill and eat mice. Mine have killed and eaten other snakes but they were much smaller. And some had been cut up by lawn mowers.
