What breed is it? It looks a bit like one of mine and I have no idea what she is.

Barred Plymouth Rock. Go ahead and post a picture of yours! There are a few different breeds that can be barred, so it could be something else like a Dominique. What type of comb does she have and what is her leg color?

Seems to have dark barring, whereas cockerels usually are grayer with wide white bands. Would like to see without all the wire

Definitely a cockerel. No doubt. Large comb, pointy saddle feathers, lots of white - you've got a boy.
