Hello. My name is grandma Henhen because I am a Grandma and my name is Henny! My daughter and I have about thirteen assorted chickens with one rooster. Our first batch were Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rock. Our second batch, which have just started laying, are Ameracunas, Black Austrolorps and a Silver Wyandotte. My daughter built the coop and run herself. The heat seems to have affected egg production but things seem to be picking up now. Thanks for all your tips on hot weather while they are in the run. They have shade cloth and lots of water plus they free range in the afternoon til sundown when they put themselves to bed! We are enjoying the healthy eggs and I also found a methed for boiling on this site as well. Great info!
I do have a question about the Buffs. One of them up and died at about six months for no explainable reason one day (fell off the perch?) and another was a very bad layer ( shell less eggs ) and was dinner. We still have one we call Short Comb that lays thin shelled that sometimes are cracked and eaten. We give them oyster shell. Don't know whether to stick it out or make bone broth. Has anyone else had bad experiences with Buffs?

. Pleased you joined our community. Every year or so I'll have a chicken that just seems like it dropped dead for no explicable reason. Buffs are pretty feathery...could she have succumbed to the Texas heat? Unsure on the thin shelled egg or if there is a buff connection.
