Do you use those for chickens, Chris09? Being made for pigeons, the effective opening looks to be much too short, even though the overall height is 12".

I have yes, They work nice once the hen gets the hang of pushing the bobs open.

The "standard" Trap nest front works on a 11" x 6 7/8" nest box opening.

but how tall is your trap nest door? i'm sure it's less than 12"...

the door only needs to be big enough to go in. on the pigeon trap door, the bars push in one way, then catch so the birds can't get back out the other. flip a switch (or whatever) and now they can exit but not get back in, until it's reset.

My trap nest door is 16" high and 14" across. It's wide so that I can make the box big enough to take a milk crate. It's tall because some of my hens need the extra space. They won't go in a shorter one, or a completely enclosed one. Of course they don't need that large an opening just to get in. I'm not buying one of these doors, was just curious. my 1/4" plywood doors are cheaper and I can make them any size I like.

i agree with galanie, thats to much money for a door.....with scrap material my doors work lovely, but if thats what you want to go with by all means please do......lets us know what u come up with, post pics and thanx for posting

I'm too spend a little more money on a trap nest door if it saves me space and time.
The nest boxes you posted are nice but they eat up a lot of floor space which is ok if you only have 15 or so hen but if you have around 50 hens (like I do) then you are eating up a ton of space.

Chris

So let me ask you, Chris, you trap nest all your hens? How much have you found it helps you and do you find you spend a lot of time with it or do you have it so that you only have to check and release a few times a day?

When I trap, I trap all 50 layers.
and do you find you spend a lot of time

Trap nesting does take more time than simply walking down and pulling eggs.
do you have it so that you only have to check and release a few times a day?

I go out 3 times a day and check birds, feed, and collect eggs.

I like the trap nest's but I like the barrel system that I uses for my exhibition birds better, I spend less time collection eggs and each hen there own 10'x10' area.

chris----you have space and money, but some of us have ideas and time!!

my trapnests are elevated 16 inches above ground so my floor space never changed.they do take up a little space in my setup because i had built the house before i knew about trapnesting, but it is nowhere near as bad as you are trying to make it sound. lets add up the doors your gonna need to trapnest 50 birds? what do you have 10? 15? 20? or 25?
thats a small fortune just for your doors! the door you are trying to market is simply a modified version of some of the illustrations i posted. prof.g.m. gowell has the original design i remade one for the viewers. not only did i remake one of his trapnest from 100 years ago but i spent 2 dollars making the whole thing,it's the black milk crate design it works by the same principle as the door you posted.for the price of one door i could make enough trapnests to trap your whole flock.by the way you wouldnt mind posting some pics of your barrel system? would love to see them!

i truly believe i could increase my flock to 50 and i would not have to alter anything i have. i have 10 trapnests that would call for 5 visits a day and thats all. i understand the more trapnests the lesser the visits but for the sake of debating it could be done with what i have setup right now.

u complaining about my floor space! really !!

floor space should not be a problem for you if each of your hens have a 10' x 10' space. and you say u have 50.

hmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
