tractor on grass

In planning stage. Had hen houses in past life but would like to build a small tractor house for 3-5 hens. I want them to be able to scratch & peck in the grass. Would that work if I put 1/2" hardware cloth on bottom of cage. I want to protect hens from neighbor's dog and wild varmints. Is the hardware cloth overkill for the bottom of the run? Would regular chicken wire be enough to protect them? Thanks!

I'm building my tractor note and I am thinking the same, but thought about using 2x4 wire. That our I'm going to run a couple strands of electric wire at the bottom with a solar charger
