Trader Joe's Fertile Eggs - Started 8/11/12

Cross posting: So sad. I have been candling my eggs every 2 days and there has been no change in 11 of 12. I took one and broke it open today, nothing. Just a normal looking yolk and egg (other than the yolk broke and the white spread thin. I am going to go get mama a few chicks and tuck under her.

Good luck on you hatch.

OK..I love the video!! Made me smile!

Hey everyone. Thx for staying tuned. Sorry for delay in updates. Computers acting wonkie.

I'm so sorry itsredcandy :( hope the new incubator works out!

I'm getting ready to leave the babies in the care of my husband for a few days :-/
They better not hatch while I'm gone!!
I candled tonight to check their progress (day 15) to my untrained eye they all look good. I'd say 4 were moving and all had smaller air pockets than before. One had a pretty large air pocket but I'm holding out hope for all of them!

I will be back in town the 31st which is day 20. With any luck we will have little cheepers that weekend!
Here's pics of tonights candling.

Hmm can't do it from my phone. I'll try once I'm
at a computer again.

Today is day 20 and so far no peeping.
I felt around under mamma today and didnt feel any pips

I will get a better look next time mom stretches her legs

Do the TJ's eggs take a bit longer b/c they were in the fridge?

Little brown sat on those eggs until every single one was hatched!!
100% hatch rate, 6 total. not bad for store bought refrigerated eggs.

I love the pic with the date stamp in it - as it turns out I did not have to enjoy by sept 6, im enjoying them RIGHT NOW

And so is my lab partner!

Absolutely FANTASTIC hatch rate! Wahooo!
You know what, the more I read, the more the information is conflicting. I guess one must do what works for one's self, no? I mean, I went researching (again) tonight, and found one site that said you MUST move the hen and eggs! So lord have mercy, I'm so ugg'd out, LOL. Hopefully, she'll feel good there tomorrow and won't give you any trouble?? I sure hope so!

Not true. I am one of the folks who has never, ever, moved a setting hen from her chosen nest. I do mark the eggs, though, so I can remove any "added" eggs laid in the nest by other hens, which they will do. Silly girls.
lockdown? i dont have to do that right?
little browns in charge right?
Yup, your hen will take care of that process; you may notice her in a sort of trance whilst she's on the eggs. The last few days, as she hears/feels/senses chick movement, she sits even more tightly and may not get up to eat or void. Or she might, but her time off the nest will be much shorter.

Mine hatched 1/1/11 (part of one of the Mahonri's Annual New Year's Day Hatch-a-thon (here on BYC) and I still have a Josie left from the four (one cockerel and 3 pullets) hatched from my Trader Joe's eggs. Two of the hens went to other folks when I had to get rid of some roosters and gave them away with a hen apiece. TJ the rooster died protecting the flock (he was one of several roosters of all different breeds) but lordy, was he a gorgeous rooster! The 3 Josies are exceptional layers - all White Leghorns.

So now that they are in separate cages how do i reintroduce them?

She was the ultimate TROOPER - I saw it in her from day one. The whole time she made this click click click cluck every time we got near, but was never aggressive when i wanted to check her or the eggs.

Now that every ones been liberated mamma is back to her normal self scratching around, eating, drinking, occasionally roosting and the babe's are in rapt attention.
They are all eating and drinking and keeping her close by.

It's really nice not to have to worry too much about the heat lamp. When should I put it up or do i need to?
When and how do i put her and the chicks back with the rest of the troupe.

One concern is that while she was away I integrated the last of the spring pullets who have now taken control of the flock, although they still roost at night in the dog crate in the run (now always open).
I think I will lock the crate in anticipation of the new babies taking over it. Hopefully the new girls in charge will start roosting in the main coop.

SO in love with my new babies - and of course a whole new "flock" of worries
