Two or three chicks ?

FYI, it's possible to integrate chicks as young as three weeks, letting them mingle with the adults after they've been withing view of the flock for a period of time so the adults accept them as non-strangers. The secret is in the use of a panic room safe pen with entrances that only the chicks can fit through.

On the topic of just one chick ending up being introduced to an adult flock, it's extremely hard on the chick. The reason is baby chicks derive their self confidence from being part of a unit. In chicken world, "one" is truly the loneliest number. Also, it would be focused on exclusively by the original flock, and would have a pretty difficult time.

Try to work things out so you avoid ending up with a solitary chick if at all possible.

I am reading up on raising chicks. It's been a little bit. It is too cold for them to be outside right now anyway, my coupe does not have heat. So I'll probably have to keep them inside for a couple months no matter what.
