Today is Day 20 of my incubation and I woke up this morning to a perky chick staring at me as I was refilling the incubator with water- it scared me because I was obviously not expecting that at 4 AM!

That chick is doing well and I noticed at the same time that another egg had pipped! When I first put the eggs in for incubating, it was around 7 pm so the internet said to count it as day 0, so I did. I’m assuming that’s why we have so much activity on day 20.

Well the second chick hatched and I got to watch the entire thing this time! I noticed some stuff still attached to the chick and I’m not super concerned but now I’m wondering if I should be. Chick is obviously tired from all of the work it just put in, but otherwise still active and peeping. The original hatchling did help a little with hatching toward the end by pecking the last little strand of membrane between the zip.

I feel inclined to say this is the umbilical cord, but I could be wrong. I’ve attached pictures for you experts out there. This is my first incubation ever, and these eggs (minus the original hatchling, which is from my flock) I bought online.

Editing to add that I have another egg that just pipped!

I have a keet that just hatched a day and half ago… and has a similar piece of tissue that was kinda stuck and left sticking out…. It’s not as noticeable as your chick but I’m concerned if it will correct itself. It did have some poop stuck to it already and I have cleaned it while at the same time irritating the small piece of flesh…. Baby is very active and healthy in all other aspects…. Do i just leave it and clean if necessary? Or do I have a keet that won’t make it??
