I am new to the world of backyard chickens. My first flock is now almost 19 weeks old. I started with 18 Barred Rock chickens. I lost one during the first hot day in their big coop. I was also gifted a Barred Rock/Easter Egger rooster (about a year old) and an Easter Egger hen (5 years old).

Raising chickens was not my idea. My mother-in-law wanted to raise some. She had chickens before but hasn't had any for somewhere around 10 years. I remodeled her original chicken coop because it was too small for the number she wanted. She kept them in their brooder at her house for about 2 weeks. I've had them every since. I have enjoyed it immensely. They left my sewing room at about 10 weeks old. Stayed in a little longer because we had a cold spring.

I'm waiting for my first egg from my littles. I get an egg daily from my older hen, unless something spooks her that day. So far every one of her eggs is infertile. Will see if our rooster is 'shooting blanks' once the littles start laying too. He is beautiful, so even if he is, he has a home and a flock to care for. He takes GREAT care of the girls.

My other hobbies are sewing (garments and quilts), puzzles, reading, and music. I LOVE to sing! Praise songs are my favorite.

I am a mother of four, and step-mother of two. Between my husband and I we have 11 grandchildren from 19 to 3. One of my FAVORITE things to do with them each year is to host "Camp NaPa" where they all come and spend the day with us playing games, making crafts, and enjoying activities. Their parents are part of the fun and we have a great time together.

My 'day job' is caring for my husband. He had a brain tumor in 1996 and is disabled from the results of his last surgery and the radiation used to treat the tumor. We are limited in our activities we can engage in but have as much fun as possible in our lives. One of my favorite things to do is to make him laugh.

I found BackYard Chickens through a Google search recommended by one of my daughter-in-laws. She found a couple sites when she was raising chickens and gave me direction on finding answers for my questions. So, here I am, ready to ask my first question.
