the silkies i had have been fine out in the heat.... and as long as they have shade and plenty of water and MAYBE a frozen water bottle in their shaded area in the afternoons, they should be fine outside....
as far as the pox thing, my silkie had it... i was for sure he was going to die... and he pulled through... no meds just let nature take it's course.. it was pretty gross at times... and he had a second outbreak later.... but i did read that you don't want them near your other birds because it can be spread through the scabs falling into the drinking water... i didn't do a LOT of research on it, but if that is what it is, they might pull through...
i've had another funky something running through my flock, hitting random birds... MOST have recovered.. not the smaller chicks though... but they get this infection and swelling JUST on the right side of their head around their eye..... to where that side swells up like 3x as big as normal.... one i treated with antibiotics, and some poultry drench... the others i didn't treat... the outcome was about the same...
most hatcheries do not vaccinate unless you pay extra... and the ones you buy from the feed store are normally not vaccinated...
oohhh and by the way... i glanced somethign about poly vi sol... i've never used it, but this poultry drench... it is awsome... i had a chick that i expected to be dead by morning so i had put her in a box on top of the the cage to die without having everyone step all over her... i sawthe bottle sitting there from trying it on the bog girl a week prior... i decided to try it so i forced a dropper into her and set her back in the box... next morning she was running around on the bathroom counter... she jumed out of the 12" tall box and down 2.5' to the counter and was having a ball running around... i was like WTH!?!?! you were sposed to be dead.. lol... i don't know where it came from, ke_ben let me borrow it and then ordered me a bottle on his next order so i could have it on hand...

I have no experience with fowl pox but it sounds pretty yucky! Good luck there. It is amazing how many things can go wrong with chickens. I think back to when I was a kid and we had chickens and I don't remember anyone getting sick. The only major things that happened were the rooster attacking us when we gathered eggs and the neighbors dog getting in and decimating our flock. We had them for at least as long as I've had them now but I've seen a lot of issues in that time. My heart goes out to you. I ended up culling several of my sick ones just cause I couldn't see them suffer...and yes, I cried. After you lose a few it gets easier to realize that sometimes chickens just die with no warning and despite what you try to do for them. It is sad, but it gets easier to deal with. It really sucks that you guys are dealing with all this as new chicken keepers. Perhaps it is trial by fire? Regarding the IFA vitamins....I have the big bottle...but really haven't used it much so I couldn't say either way. I don't really know why I haven't used it. Maybe I should drag it out.

evonne, we may need more info on the drench. That is an amazing story! Maybe you can strong arm ke_ben into joining us and sharing some much needed info? What antibiotic did you use for the swelling sickness? I have heard really great things about Denegard for MG/MS but am reading up on it some more.


Max, thanks for the info on fermenting grains. That is so cool. I bookmarked the link so I can read more about it, but it sounds like a great way to convert feed. Many of my girls are on strike because of the trip. I'm only getting about 6-10 eggs a day since we got here, unless they are hiding them in the rabbit brush.


Now for the Broody Mama Drama update!
As expected the trip broke the new broodies; Widget, Viola and Marley. Casino held fast though and hatched out 7 little beauties yesterday and last night! Thanks so much to Max and Holly for the eggs! While all the chicks are mostly black (some have white or yellow too) the eggs they hatched from may ID them. We had one hatch from a VERY dark brown egg, one from a very olive green egg, and all the rest hatched from blue/light green eggs. I am so impressed with Casino. She is the broody mama BOMB! I will try to get some pics of the bunch tomorrow. So you can see how well my hatch matches with what Max hatched out recently. I gotta admit, those BCM genes are strong!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the trip had a weird effect on Quorra, the Blue Copper Marans broody mama of 4 chicks. The chicks are about a month old and were hatched out a day or so before Lizzies chicks. Anyways, we get here, open up the carrier and Quorra acts as if she doesn't even notice the chicks. They are calling to her and she just walks away. She doesn't feed them, cluck at them or try to protect them. It was really weird. Luckily she will still let them roost with her at night so at least they are kept warm and protected then, which is good cuz it's been very cold at night here in UT, and our coop is not a winter coop at all! I will get some pictures of that too. The chicks are getting along pretty well and Quorra has laid an egg every day since we got here so I guess that she was ready to be done and the trip just sped things along.

We also lost a chick. One of Lizzie's store bought babies disappeared on the first day. As the run is covered with netting and fenced with chain link and there were no dig marks and no body/feathers/blood on the scene, we suspect it got out through the chain link and got lost.

At our house, we have a way of dealing with losses like this. We assume the lost and presumed dead bird must have been a boy and destined to die anyways...so it's not so bad. This way of reasoning gets really tricky when a laying hen dies an untimely death but it works for us!

Amazon had it so i ordered that well see how it does with lizzie she seems depressed but she was close to meg
 
also our yellow chicken lizzie now seems to be acting very lethargic. her crop has food in it and i just gave her some water and poly vi sol. Do chickens act this way when a "friend" dies?

It's pretty somber here tonight. We lost Meg yesterday, and now Lizzie! I was just out loving her an hour before, but when hubby came home he discovered her in the garden. I think she was my favorite...our very first chick. We still have no idea what was wrong with either of them. The symptoms Lizzie had (swollen sinuses, bubbly eyes) we never saw in Meg. Meg just stopped eating and was droopy while Lizzie ate and ate and ate, right up to the end. At least the other 3 seem fit as fiddles.

I don't know if we can take any more loss right now. They were our first two.
