I attempted to make home made granola bars. They came out as hard a rock so I decided I've discovered the perfect chicken treat. The chickens, however, were of another opinion:

Louise attempts the foot stomp to shatter the morsel

There is much discussion among the flock

Stan attempts to break the clump with his foot

Stan pushes the mass around to show it who's boss

Then two try to break it

Maybe staring at it will make it fall apart

Then several attack it at once

They keep chipping away at it

Another foot stomp to keep it in place

And they keep at it

I think I'll call these things, 'mini flock blocks'.

HAhahaha!! I love thier faces!

My recipe is:

6 cups crushed oats or general granola from the bulk section. Dont get instant, it makes gritty wierd bars!

1 cup softened or melted butter, so long as its not hot.

1/2 - 3/4 cup brown sugar.

Add in fruits, sunflowers, heck macadamia nuts if you want!

You can even add some honey too.

Mix very well so that all the grains are coated with butter and sugar. Pat into a cookie sheet nice and flat. Run a knife through them into the size of bars you want. that way then they cook they can be broken apart easily.

Cook at 325 for about 12-15 minutes or until its a medium tan color. Let them sit out and cool off.

Ive never made the recipe for soft bars, but if you cook them until light brown they will still solidify. the higher the heat the harder they will be.

Im sure you can add in a cup of flour in place of a cup of granola and add in some baking powder to fluff it up. An egg probably would not hurt either.

Thanks for the recipe. I'll try it when I get the notion to cook again. Maybe 5-10 years. Just kidding.

Great pictures! My flock is super fussy, so I can relate to some of the reactions you received from them! LOL
