Oh... I still wouldn't ever do that to any of my birds but it's good it doesn't hurt that much. It's called dubbing and is required for Old English and Modern Game Cocks to be shown. As well as standard game.
It's a tradition carried on for centuries and barely hurts. It's done about 1 yr old. Or preference of the breeder. It's like getting a shot, hurts for a few hours before going away. It bleeds but scabs over. Animals have a high pain tolerance.

I don't like PETA. But I read some more and apparently chickens try not to show any weakness if there in pain... The world may never know if were accidentally torturing them or just practically poking them with a pen. Lol.Some people will argue this. But these'ok be your PETA like folks who think almost every poultry tradition is bad. And that its cruel and inhumane....
Yeah. We never have the guts to it. So we buy them after its done.
Sometimes people do it because they have breeds with large single combs and live in cold climates. It prevents frostbite and therefore the bird doesn't have to suffer waiting for the dead comb to fall off.
My dog's tail was cut off. Poor thing, he is a huge Mastiff.I would think most practices for show breeds are painful - just because the bird doesn't shriek, doesn't mean it feels good. But, its the same with dogs, show horses, etc that's why I got out of showing dogs. In UK you cannot crop ears on the breeds like boxer, Dobermans, etc.
