I got this rooster in a order of Silver Laced Wyandotte’s from Hoover’s. It looked completely different from the Wyandotte’s as a chick, it looked just like a Welsummer chick but it had a rose comb. It’s around 12 weeks old right now and it has new feathers coming in with a strange pattern. What is it? Could it be a mixed Silver Laced Wyandotte?

Got it

Black laced silver Wyandotte
Hmm I looked up black laced silver and it looks like it’s the same as silver laced. He doesn’t look like the silver laced he came with really at all. Here’s what they look like. He does seem to be getting some type of strange lacing though lol. It’s just really weird.

Ha! I thought I was onto something there. Because you are correct - his feathers dont look right v. the typical SLW, but - his double row comb is right on.
I think it may just be because he is a cockerel that he looks different like that.

Truthfully, I dont know much about the wynadottes. We never really got into them.

Well I got a Silver Laced Wyandotte cockerel in that order as well and he doesn’t look like him either lol. Also I just noticed the mystery rooster has white legs and my Wyandottes have yellow.

Yes, those are two names for the same color.

He might be a mix of some sort (Silver Laced Wyandotte mixed with some white-legged breed.)

Or he might be a poor-quality Wyandotte, although the leg color argues against that. If the hatchery breeder flock contains only yellow-legged birds, they should never produce a white-legged chick, due to which genes are dominant and recessive. (And if the hatchery breeder flock does have some birds with white legs, they have a problem, because Wyandottes are not supposed to have white legs.)

Normally I'd guess a hatchery to have given a different breed when it doesn't match. This time I think the hen met up with the wrong roo. It has partial lace which is typically of a SLW cross. The rose comb is dominant, so what ever the other breed is could have a single comb and more than likely white legs.

A true "mystery chick" 😖
