What exactly is a Calico Silkie?

I have a gray with red leakage and was told to call it tortoiseshell
I've seen other pics of birds with coloring similar to him and they were calling it calico...
What do you breed him to if you don't have any grays?

I'm a huge fan of those that are different, unfortunately those that are into silkies for the $$$ aren't. Which means not many people want to buy eggs from the different looking ones. They are looking for perfection. So i'm working on improving my flock to have those colors people are looking for but I will still have my oddballs. My sizzle pen is full of oddballs. My favorite roo looks alot like your guy you have for sale but he doesn't have the gold leackage. He's black with thewhite or grey on his head down to his shoulders. He is a real sweetie too. He has produced some beautiful babies and many turned out looking just like him.

That's a little offensive. I can tell you I haven't made money on my birds by a LONG shot, but I don't want to keep off colors. I breed to the standard, not for $$$, as you put it, but because I want to preserve the breed and the colors as they are, working towards an ideal. I also enjoy showing, which, as anyone can tell you, is not a money making proposition.

Hello Silkie Lovers,

I just got a few silkies and wonder if this is what you would call "calico" or "tortoise shell" colored? Any ideas on the sex of this bird? It seems to like to lay around in the corners of the yard and coop. The comb appears to be mostly flat and dark. I am not sure about there being streamers from the head though, and the pretty tail looks a tad longer than some of my hens. I was told it was hatched in November, but I think its older than that. Hmmm. Any ideas guys?

Hi All!
I have stumped some people with my new Silkie and I stumbled upon this post. I fell in love with this girl and was lucky enough to bring her home. Is she a Calico? No body seems to know what she is :( I think she is beautiful :) She still needs a name!

A Calico as per what is commonly called Calico is the Grey with to much Automasol Red leaking thru. By a genetic standpoint, there is those who say that a true Calico can only be made with a Splash having Red.

There were a few for sale on BYC auctions, if you wanted to see some. There was a thread on Silkies of a Different color & Calico Silkies that had some pics as well.

Broodello- There is the 'calico' that is gray with red leakage, and there is the 'calico' that is splash with red. I've seen both called calico. It will be interesting to see if this color goes anywhere.
