What happens when the top hen in the pecking order dies?

Our hen that was the first in the pecking order died this morning...my mom was talking about how they'll have to sort out the pecking order now....doesn't the 2nd hen in the pecking order usually take over?

It's up for grabs. It is hard to tell how they will sort it out. Pecking order isn't static, as it changes from time to time anyhow.

I couldn't imagine the hen that is (was) #2 in the pecking order not taking over, though. She's a rather scary hen xD
