About last week, my dad came outside and there was a hawk just sitting on top of the shed. We let our chickens free range so as soon as he told me I was terrified and ran out to get my girls! Sure enough we found one dead, but there was a catch.... She was under the shed where the hawk couldn't possibly get her, and she was missing a head.:( I refused to let my chickens freerange until we got a rooster! But that's a whole nother story. So was it a hawk or something else, and should I be concerned?

I don't think a hawk would kill like that, more likely waiting to catch one as they come out.

If the foundation of the shed is open..no wire surrounding the base, then it could have been an owl.

If there is a barrier around the foundation, suspect a raccoon.

HAwk will pursue hens and juveniles into cover which shed is a possible example of. If done by someone else then it was most likely done at night when even rooster will be defenseless.

Show picture of location and if possible the birds remains. If something other than a hawk, then you have a problem that needs to be addressed before dark to prevent additional losses.
