What is the deal with chicken glasses?

Today I found the strangest thing...does anyone really use chicken glasses to keep them from pecking each other? I found this thing that uses a little stick with a hook to secure these plastic discs through the nostrils. They must act like blinders but prevent them from seeing directly in front but allow them to see to the side? I have to wonder, is it painful? Can the chicken still eat and breathe ok???

I've heard of and seen them, but I've never used them myself.

There must be some other way to keep chickens from pecking!?!
If I see this happening, is there anything else I can do besides separating the chickens?
