What would you put in here?

Louisville, Kentucky. I thought I filled out my profile, but I guess it didn't "take." Hmm...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there two or three species of lovebirds floating around out there? That may be why there are different experiences...I've never owned them, though.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

There are nine species total, with the Peach-faced Agapornis roseicollis being perhaps the most common and in a ton of captive-bred color variations. A few of the species have never or are very rare in captivity in the US: Agapornis swindernianus, A. canus & A. pullarius. The general behavior of the most commonly kept species is pretty much the same and yes, they can be temperamental. If the birds are kept for breeding, a trio (with the odd bird out) can cause issues. Hand-fed birds, not in a breeding situation, may do ok with an odd number - just something I would be very careful doing. Lovebirds are also quite noisy!!

Thank you, that's really helpful information.

I don't mean to piss off any lovebird enthusiasts, but I don't really like their color or shape. I don't know why, other than that I don't like them.

I'm honestly leaning toward simple zebra finches. How many could live in that cage, if I didn't breed them on purpose? I'm thinking about getting a pair and that's it, so they'd have tons of room...

Is the floor caged?

If it isn't you could pop in some quail there, haha.

But, for other birds you could put in some linnies or parrotlets they are relatively quiet.

It actually has mesh, but it's removable.

I've been told that I can't (or shouldn't) keep quail other than button quail indoors. I'm building a pen for them outside...

Love birds and the other small parrot-like birds are NOISY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They should be in pairs if kept in a cage like that, otherwise 2 will pair up and attack and maybe kill the other bird.

Here are a few ideas for you:

ZEBRA FINCH are a good - but they breed like crazy. Some people don't like the constant 'beep beep' noise they make - but I like that sound. If you don't want to breed them you should keep ALL MALES. They are the most colourful. Not having any females will also stop them fighting.

GOULDIAN FINCH. They are very beautiful and, despite what some people say, are easy to care for. They are also very quite and the males have a nice song. But they are more expensive that other finches. But if you breed them you can sell the young and make some money!

A CANARY or a pair of canaries would be very happy in that cage, and the male will sing. They are active and interesting to watch and can get quite tame.

DIAMOND DOVES are charming, quiet and beautiful birds - they breed easily, but can be a little nervous and flighty.

RING NECK DOVES - you must let them out to exorcise in the room for free flight. They are very tame, but some people are annoyed with the males cooing.

SOCIETY FINCHES They are quite, and lively. You could keep a small group in there no problem.

Its fine to keep quail inside - the CHINESE PAINTED QUAIL are rather timid and nervous birds and the males can be nasty to the hens. JAPANESE QUAIL / CONERNIX QUAIL are the best - they are calm, friendly and lay lots of delicious eggs.

you can make the cage look nice buy adding natural branches as perches, and plastic plants for cover and security. birds will like to use a nest box to sleep in - but don't put one in unless you want them to breed! Quail like a dust bath in there and some hide boxes and hay too.

!! I was just concerned about that post about trios as suggestion and jack2002003 nailed the best post in this thread.

A relative of the Society Finch and pretty affordable is the Spice Finch. I see them at all the big chain stores and they are pretty calm.

My quail are indoors in a cage like this one (9 Cots, and they got plenty of room)

I also have 4 buttons in their own cage.

And two budgies in front of em.

(All indoors, the only downside is smell, plus you can get away with all the by-laws if your neighbours aren't disturbed by your animal(s)).

I would vote for zebra finches! I just got 4 a couple days ago and I really like them as mentioned above though they do make a beeping noise but I kind of like it they are fun to watch too.

Definitely agree! I have a single female lovebird and boy can she be noisy! They also can learn and repeat irritating noises as well LOL

Zebra or society finches are great though! All of them can come in a variety of color mutations as well so you can have a few that are each different colors. I find them very relaxing to watch after a stressful day and the males have a beautiful song. Both kinds do get along very well BUT if one of the females is laying and sitting her partner will defend the nest not letting anyone else near just like any other kind of bird. I find my male zebra finch especially likes to sit on eggs and steal the others nests haha. I'll post some pictures of mine for you to see once I find them on my computer
