I'm looking to compile a list of poultry-related items that could make up an emergency kit for those with flocks who may one day need those items to help their flock thrive and make it through. What sort of items do you stock for your animals, in case of some kind of emergency or health-related issues? "Vetericyn" is one recommendation I am adding, after prior use with this and experience with it. Corid being another. Any other ideas? Thank you!

Providing links here for myself (and the benefit of others) while working on article. DISCLOSURE, these are Amazon Affiliate links so if a product is purchased via the link, it helps support the Homestead a little 😉 :

In my health kit:
Nutri-drench
Sav-a-chick
Antibiotic ointment
Gauze
Scissors
Vet wrap
Vetericyn (as you mentioned)
Baytril
Fishmox
Corid
Antifungal cream
Scalpel
Tweezers
Gloves
Headlamp
Styptic powder
Epsom salt
A baby swaddle
Heating pad

And because I live in fire country and evacuation is a real issue in summer:
A fishing net
Pics and my contact info for each chicken
Poultry shipping crates
A tent (for a temporary coop)

The reason I made that thread was to get the names of various meds used to treat chicken issues. I also want to list places to get them, like, does TSC have it? Local grocery or pharmacy? Get it online, and from where?

I keep reading threads along the lines of, "My chicken is doing XYZ. How to treat?" and seeing replies of, "Use ABC with this dosage."

But then I can't remember the names of the meds, other than the same ones keep popping up. So I'd like to make a list of the various meds that would be good to have on hand. I know some are cheap, but some aren't, so it would be a medicine chest that I collect as I can afford to.

I plan to let my neighbor (who got 16 chicks this spring) know what I have on hand. Really, am I going to need that whole 16 oz bottle of Corid? Probably not, but I would certainly share if she needed some.

I have:
Gauze pads
cotton swabs
cotton balls
vet wrap
Latex free gloves (I'm sure latex would be fine but I'm allergic)
Nutri-Drench
Plain epsom salts
Plain Neosporin
Varied syringes (from 1/2 ml to 5 or 10 ml)
aquarium tubing (for tube feeding)
Sav-A-Chick
Valbazen (de-wormer)
Cornstarch
Veterycyn
Fish Mox
250 mg calcium citrate pills (for humans, but works for egg bound issues)
Vaseline
Small pair scissors
flashlight.
Hand sanitizer

Hope this helps! I probably forgot something. I want to add Hydrogen Peroxide and a few other things but haven't gotten to it yet.

I keep it in a tool storage bin type of thing with a list of expiration dates and "Chicken First Aid" on the front.

As a human doctor, there's two things you should have in your medicine cabinet. First, ditch the Vetricyn and use Hibiclens diluted, instead. Hibiclens is what we use to scrub with before surgeries. After 10 minutes of it applied, it kills ALL bacteria, viruses, fungus and yeast, AND it keeps killing them for a full 24-48 hours! It doesn't sting or dry skin out like Povidone iodine, so use it instead of Vetricyn. Then for a wound cream, use Silvadene. It's prescription but any doctor or vet will give it to you. It's not super expensive, but use Good RX coupon if you need to. Silvadene has silver in it and it heals wounds in much faster than Bacitracin. It will discolor from white to a gray black color. That's normal when it's exposed to air. Just clean wounds the next day with Hiubiclens (found in the wound care isle at pharmacy) and re-apply Silvadene.

I'd add: Vet wrap, bandage scissors,

Let me look up the powder to apply to kill maggots ... Got it on Ebay from overseas for my horse. She had a wound that vet thought was contaminated with parasite. It's called:

Bayer Negasunt Dusting Powder
