when to feed?

do you leave chicken crumble down all day or just at certain times? I have a feeder that holds 30lbs. I fill it and leave it till it's empty is that right? Some one told me feed only during the day and not at night What is a good schedule?

Mine have food and water available 24/7. They won't overeat and they don't eat on a schedule.

Leave it out all the time. Night time feeding is good for small chicks. 30lbs is a lot of feed for hatchlings, it could take them weeks to eat that. It might go stale waiting for them. I'd only put a few lbs in until they are bigger. Make sure there is about 2" of feeder space for each chick or smaller ones will be crowded out by larger ones.

Feed enough in the morning to have only about 1/2 or 3/4 lb left over the next morning.
Take whats left over and mix it with todays feed. This keeps feed fresh instead of getting old.

30 pounds is far too much to put out, unless you're feeding about 90 hens.
