My flock has fowl pox and I started my medicine round and I noticed that one of my Silkies must have it bad enough where it’s covering her nostrils or dirt covering her nostrils? She’s black so it’s difficult to see anything. Advise??

Normally, I would say not to disturb the fowl pox scabs, but you need too make sure that her nostrils are not caked with secretions or food, or scabs. Use warm saline—1/4 tsp of table salt added to a cup of water. If the saline doesn’t soften it in a few minutes so that you can remove it with a tissue or cotton, apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide with a QTip to help soften the material. Be gentle with the nostrils, but a wooded toothpick or fingernail can help scrape any debris off the nostril.

Thank you so much!
