I have four 16 week old chickens (2 BOs and 2 EEs) and I'm new to chickens. They have always slept curled up together either on the floor of their coop or preferably in the nesting boxes. I've tried closing off the nesting boxes, but they will shove themselves into any open spot and pile on top of each other to get into the boxes to sleep. Sometimes one or two are on the roosting bars but never all of them. I try to move them there, but each night its the same thing. The roosting bars are not very high, and I don't think there is much I can do to raise them (the coop is not super tall). I know that I'll need to open the nesting boxes soon, but was hoping they would be in better habits before I did. So my real question is, do they need to sleep on the roosting bars? Is it better for them in winter? Are they ok just sleeping on the floor of their coop? Or should I keep working on trying to get them up on the bars? Thanks!
