I have 4 buff orpingtons and 4 gold sex-links in my new flock of 15. Now that they are getting some feathers, I can tell them apart, but I don't know which is which...I'm new.

gold on the left, buff on the right?

They're supposed to be all gals, but if I do by chance have a rooster, when and how will I be able to tell?

You have it right. The redder ones are the sex link and the lighter ones are the buffs
