I am always looking for new ways to reuse the various things we have laying around here. I also am in need of more brooders. Well, my one 14 yr old son took decided to see what he could do with some of the scraps of wood, welded wire, and an old shipping crate we had on hand.

Supplies:
2 - 1 1/2 inch - hook & eyes
2 - 1 inch hinges
3 - 2x2 wood pieces
1 - Wood crate/box 2 ft x 4 ft
1 1/2 inch wood screws
1 x 1/2 Welded Wire
Staples
Screw driver (manual or battery operated)
Stapler (manual or air)

The front view of the Brooder. He put a hook and eyes on either side to lock it closed as we have barn cats. Also used a scrap piece of 2x2 to form a handle.

The wire is the same wire we use for the floors of our rabbit cages and huts. it is 1 x 1/2 wire spacing. This allows us to see in without opening the brooder. It also allows airflow in and out of the brooder. He made sure to staple it securely into place.

This is the underside of the lid with the 2x2 frame. It will stay open and is not very heavy so no worries of little one fingers.

I know it is not pretty, but it works. We can put a heat lamp on the lid wire or we can attach it to the lip of the brooder. We also can put heat plates in for those times when a lamp will not do the job.
