Here we go! Staking off the spot we picked on our farm to add the new building. We have designed it to be big enough to use for our 4 Boar goats as well. We have dubbed it the "Goakin House".

We are finally going to have chickens!!! Yes, I am excited to have our own fresh eggs but I love animals and have wanted to add chickens to our small farm for a long time. Today is the day! Now to build a coop for them!

I wanted 3 chicks to start but Tractor Supply requires you to buy 6. My husband, the farmer said that I should get 12 because they rarely all survive. That's a lot of eggs for 2 people! We have 6 Long Island Reds, the Rhodas and 6 Black Sex Link, the Bettys. I cannot imagine ever being able to tell them apart! They started out in my tack room in a large plastic container which they quickly outgrew. We then fashioned a brooder out of 2 large moving boxes. I was unprepared for the mess that they would make in my tack room. Dust everywhere!! I decided I had to just let of my standards of clean until they moved out!

Finally got a real engineer on the job! Our son loves a good project too when he visits. House will be 14'x8' with a 10'x8' covered run.

Metal roof is on and we can move the girls into the run. I was so happy to get them out of my tack room! We put all 12 in a large dog crate and carried them up to their new home.
