My sister has had several of her chickens just die over the last couple of weeks. She has given them vitamins and seperated the ones that she has noticed not feeling well. Other than just being "puny" no other symptoms. She said today she walked out and saw one of her hens having what she can...
Hi all. This is my second year to have chickens and I have never had a hen go broody. About six weeks ago I was gifted a bunch of chickens including 5 banty hens.
One of those banties have went broody, I am almost sure.
She has made herself a little nest in the corner of our coop...
It is a new day and I am hoping my new barriers for the black snake will help. I forgot to mention my grandmaw who raised chickens all her life, had me do the pie plate thing, so there are six pie plates out there too naking all kinds of noise every time the wind blows. I will report back later!
I do some of the same things everyone else is talking about. I am in hot south Mississippi, 108 today with 85% humidity. My poor chickens look like they are going to melt!
I go out at least twice a day and give them fresh cool water and lots of it. I have about 45 chickens and I have a 5...
I have been having a problem with at least one black snake getting some of my eggs, mostly the bantam eggs. I actually saw the snake about a week and a half ago but thought nothing of it. I am a country girl and am usually not alarmed by most critters. Anyway - two days later I noticed that I...
I actually got 6 eggs yesterday but still no banty eggs. It was HOT here yesterday with the heat index of about 105. I also think it is the heat.
Good luck to all waiting on those eggs!
I was actually going to ask the very same questions when I seen yours. I have 8 regular size hens and 10 banty. Last week I was getting about 10-14 eggs a day and the last 6 days very few, only 2 yesterday. No banty eggs for at least 5 days.
I was hoping that it was just the heat. It has...
I agree with jenni2142 . Do not ever let a rooster treat you like that. Show him you are the boss with a swift kick in the butt!
I actually carry an old broom handle with me to my coop. When I see one of the roos try to "do his thing" with one of the hens, I knock him off. That is what the...
I KNOW!!!
I am so excited. My children share my excitment, but my hubby is kinda like "great, more chickens to crow" He would rather have more Boston Terriers.
My friends have taken to calling me "chicken momma". If I had the room and was able to feed them all, I would have 100. (looks like I...
Day before yesterday I got a message from a old friend I went to nursing school with on Facebook. She asked me if I would like some more chickens. Her mother had some she was wanting to give away. I said sure.
Yesterday afternoon, my sis and I went to her parents house with cages and a net...

I was a new chicken owner this time last year and this BYC is a life saver!!!
I love my Buff Orps, but I love ALL my chickens, all 30 of them, oh and two turkeys!
My advice is to read all the information in the learning (https://www.backyardchickens.com/lcenter.html)section of...

Second - I have a hen that is a loud mouth and I remember asking myself the very same thing when she was a pullett. She has always been a loud mouth.
I agree - since you are an outlaw send her along with the roo.
