I have a small flock of 7 quail this year that I hatched like I do each spring. I usually give my quail away in the fall so I don't have to feed/water in the winter. I am considering keeping this flock to hatch their eggs in the spring though.
I don't know what colors to call afew of them...
so, I hadn't gotten any more eggs from any of them after this - until yesterday. I got one, and it 'float tested' fine (it sank). So, maybe the two eggs I got last week were held in by the hens for too long? Just weird. None yet today.
I have 6 birds left after the attack - and after...
OK, a little background -I hatched eggs myself and at exactly 6 weeks, I got 3 eggs. 2 had been pecked open and one literally exploded in my hand. Rotten, stinky rotten and looked like puss. I assumed that I had missed them somehow and they rotted from the heat. That very night, a dog broke...
thanks, I think I will go ahead and process her tomorrow if she doesn't look better. I am not attached. I have a few young roosters in the freezer - probably adding her with those will make enough for a full meal now.
I have an 8'x8' pen in my back yard that I have my current 6 quail in (5 hens, 1 rooster). Yesterday, we had a red-tailed hawk terrorizing them. I don't know for how long as I was in town. When I went out there after the hawk flew away, all 6 of them had injuries on their faces right above...
I have no way to get another to keep it company. I ended up giving it away to an aquaintance in town who has more patience with babying critters than I do :)
I can't wait to see pics of your setup!
Right now, mine are in a ground pen (a dozen quail in an 8'x8' pen) with rabbit water bottles (Lixit) for their water and a chicken hanging feeder for feed. It drives me NUTS that they dig it out though and I am going to have to figure out soon how to...
I put my (now 7 week old) quail outside before they were 3 weeks old and they did fine. I live in NW Washington and we had a decent spell of weather at the time. Didn't lose any in the transition.
I bought some eggs, they were shipped and many arrived damaged. I set as many as I thought were undamaged and crossed my fingers. So, on day 19 (was about to toss them all), ONE chick hatched. He's 24 hours old now and seems to be fine, other than peeping incessantly.
I am not sure what...
well, I set some new eggs today, so was able to take a pic before I forgot. I actually need to go rearrange these eggs so they are all pointed in the same direction now that I look at the pic! Anyhow, it shows the ''corral'' I made from wire so when I tip the whole incubator for 'egg turning'...
yes, it has a pharoah colored patch - but it is the smallest of all the quail (just coturnix, not listed as jumbos). I guess I'll just call it white, LOL
if you think about it - dogs have only been eating kibble for a relatively short time in history - less than 100 years I would bet. Dogs of the past survived on scavenging, on leftovers of all sorts, and I'm sure they ate lots of raw foods as their owners processed meat for their own table.
I recently hatched a batch of coturnix - from a batch of eggs that were just labeled as a 'variety'. I got mostly browns, a few golden, then one mostly white. The white has one nickle sized brown spot on the back of it's head. Since it has some coloring, would it be considered a white (A&M?)...
