We researched many different breeds of chickens. We decided we would get "chickens of fate" We went to the feed store a certain day, and whatever breeds they had we would choose them. We wound up with a buff orpington, and easter egger, and a brahma. Later we got austrolorp. All of these breeds...
Buff orpington-because they're sweet
Brahma- sweet, great egg layers
Easter Egger- great eggs, fun personalities
Jersey giant-always wanted one
Maran- just because
Faverolles- bearded chicken!
I am also in the path of the hurricane, although not directly on the coast. I'm most worried about the wind and branches falling from the trees, so I am bringing my chickens inside
I still love everyday going outside in all weathers and letting them out of the coop. Hugging them, and giving them treats. Collecting eggs to eat, changing food and water, and cleaning the coop. Then putting them to bed each night. And it's been three years so far.
I found that a couple of sticks for perching and an old DVD hanging up was a lot of stimulation for chicks. Plus hand feeding them and picking them up once in awhile.
I think a way to make money would be to build chicken coops. A good quality coop would probably make a great profit. Too bad I don;t have those skills.
