Swollen and bleeding base of feather/follicle

An update: After 3 weeks in a bandage and the 'lump' looking ok, my hen managed somehow to get to it and it opened up again. Decided to take her to the vets. It was pouring with blood :-( The vet said she has injured or damaged a blood vessel in there and that's why it's bleeding so much...

Green diarrhea, not eating or drinking

I've had a similar thing happen with several of my hens and I hate to say it, but they were all at the end of their life. Hens pretend for as long as they can that they are ok, so they are not attacked by the others. This includes pretending to eat when in fact they are starving. The green...

    Hands on hatching and help

You're absolutely right in what you say - couldn't have said it better myself! I helped two chicks when their mum abandoned the eggs to concentrate on a chick that had hatched 4 days previously. The eggs and chicks had gone cold, not even pipped, but were chirping away. The membrane had got...

Pipping Eggs - Is Membrane too Dry?

Hi Nicola, I know how nerve wracking and anxious it can be waiting for eggs to hatch, especially your first batch. Some breeds of chicken are renowned for having problems with a dry/thick membrane when chicks are trying to hatch - maybe that is the problem? Some chicks go as much as three...

Swollen and bleeding base of feather/follicle

Thanks for responding everyone and for your advice :-) Much appreciated. My hen is ok again and back with her buddies. Keeping the bandage on (with regular checks) until the scab/lump has gone so she can't peck at it and re-open it.

    Choking chicken

This could be gape worm, BUT my hens do a not so 'dramatic' version of this when they have a cold and their noses are runny/watery. They can't breathe through their nose when lying down and snoozing and so 'gasp' for air every now and again.Does the chicken have a runny/wet nose? If she has a...

Swollen and bleeding base of feather/follicle

Hello, Found one of my hens with her chest feathers covered in blood 4 days ago. She was obviously weak and not feeling well. On examining her she has a very small lump (about a little finger nail size) at the base of one of her upper/left side chest feathers that had been bleeding over night...
