Thank you everyone for your support and suggestions. It really helped me make a decision on how I should help my friend depart.
Here's a discription of events in case it can help anyone else -
I went with @KsKingBee's recommendation to use ether to put him to sleep since it seemed the most...
Hello all,
Sadly, my peacock, Avocado, has reached the end days. He has lived at least the last 5 1/2 years with only 1 good leg from an injury he sustained before we had him. While before he could move around fine by hopping, this past winter (California) has been very rough on him. We would...
I had a chicken dig a hole and lay an egg in it under the nesting box. The egg was the same color as the dirt so we missed it for a couple days. Chickens can be sneaky! 😂
I agree with the rest. All look like pullets. Maybe they're just getting their big girl voices. I've also heard that sometimes a female will take on a rooster-like role, even making similar noises at times.
By this time, there would be obvious differences between your pullets and cockerels...
At 8 weeks, that's a pretty red face. The legs are also very long. I don't know about barring patterns but I know you can tell from that too. At this point, it looks like a cockerel.
I would wait a bit longer to make an official call though. Listen for vocalizations like crowing and more...
I haven't tried them, but apparently they make chicken glasses that work to cut down on aggressive behavior. They're called pinless peepers and people swear by them. It makes it so the chicken can only look to the sides "prey style" instead of straight ahead as a predator would.
What ever you...
Looks very much like a young rooster, but not sure about the breed. What a cutie! Chickens can get lonely when alone, so he might like a couple of hen friends, but I've known people to just have a rooster for a pet and they are perfectly content. Check your local zoning laws to make sure you can...
At this point, they look like a pullet. Usually at 5 weeks you can already start to tell a difference in comb size and color. Looks like my 3 pullets (now 13 weeks) when they were that age. Not the same breed, but the combs and waddles looked exactly the same as yours.
Here's the set up I just used for my broody! It broke her in 5 days. I also sat her in water for 4 minutes for the first 2 days, just once a day, to help her cool down faster since the weather was hot.
Hello everyone!
I was doing my daily chick check today and I noticed one of my 5 week chicks sounded a bit different than normal. When she peeps, she almost sounds congested and I noticed a few sneezes as well. When she pooped, it looked pale yellow and foamy.
Does anyone know what might be...
