While that all makes sense, i dont think the feed store is the issue. We were told in advance what time the chicks were arriving, and to be there within half an hour, for comfort sake of the chicks. They arrived at 11:17am and they were in my car by 11:32, and home and it a heated brooder by...
We have some new chicks, (started with 11) less than a week old, we bought from our local tractor supply.
One died the first day, shortly after we got it. A second one died this morning. It had a leg that was limp and it couldn't balance. Last night I moved it to its own brooder so it wouldn't...
Going to look at some ISA browns a neighbor is getting rid of. Theyre 18 months old and advertised as healthy. Is there anything i should be looking for as a warning sign before i bring a few of them home?
An independant hatchery nearby (farm) they breed their own, many different heritage and rare varieties. I think there was just a mistake in sorting when people came to pick up their chicks.
We ordered our 4 ameraucanas and picked them up on tuesday, hours after hatching. I didnt get a good look at them on pick up, they were in their box all cozy, and i didnt want to disturb them.
Its become obvious though that one of these is very different from the others.
Three look like the...
We're building a fairly large, walk in shed type coop. Around 8x10. We already have a large pad poured outside in a shady corner of our yard that this can sit on. Although, we'll elevate it some.
We may put up a temporary divider wall so we can put them in one coop but wait to introduce them...
I have to keep mine inside this year-weve moved to a new property and have no out buildings. (Not even our coop yet) so they're going to be living in our laundry room for a fee weeks.
Next year though, outside. Although,it does feel weird and like a waste of energy to heat the outdoors.
I bought a "mystery" batch of pullets. They're cheap, sex is guarantee (money back) and they just give you whatever brown egg layers they have too many of on delivery day.
Also ordered 6 red sex links, ready to lay. They don't all come in until April.
I have a friend who is also giving me a...
I'm in southern Ontario, Niagara falls area. And yes, I would keep the roof cleared if we did clear.
I wouldn't make the whole thing clear, just part of it.
Thanks!! I'll figure something else out. I don't intend to keep them in their coop all day in the winter, so maybe it isn't necessary.
I always hear about chickens not getting enough sun in the winter but maybe those are the chickens who are forced to stay inside?
Im building a new coop. I thought about making the roof, or part of the roof, clear corrugated plastic, to allow for some more daylight during our long winter months. The coop will be in a shady area in the summer.
Any thoughts? Bad idea or good idea?
Thank you! I'm from the midwest and am now in Ontario. No one from where I'm from does anything special in the winter (aside from making sure their water doesn't freeze.)
I wasn't sure if I should do something to winterize our chicken coop since winters here are longer, or just leave them be...
