Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki ~ Sorry our conversation got cut short, my internet took a dive and wouldn't let me back on FB for some reason. Talk to you later!

Don't get me wrong, I do follow the lead of buying the best stock you can find and go from there. Problem is, this breed is so new, relatively speaking, to this country, and many were trying to make big bucks selling a "rare breed", and that included the top breeders. So even if you did your...

project involving volume and vocalization can you help?

Wow. I say move to the country, and let the roos rip! "A roo, is a roo, is a roo Cock-a-doodle-doo is the best thing they do!" ~ (Me-12/5/12) Sorry, I love to hear my roos' crows, but those in the city areas do not because of ordinances. Good luck with your project, I hope someone can truely...

Lisa ~ It's for taking well lit pictures of birds or eggs; a photography box if you will. :)

Not done with the breed, but possibly with the variety. In some cases, it has been shear ignorance on the part of the "breeder" as you suggest. Others, that should've known better or at least divulge the faults that their flock had, basically eliminated that part, and sold them as good stock, or...

Don ~ So what makes you think that they are selling their best stock? People that have advertised before, whether it be actual adult birds, chicks, or eggs, have all outright lied to my face! People selling adult birds are selling their culls, let's face it. You may get lucky in finding a...

No I haven't Don. There will be no hatching or new additions here until spring, so I have a few months yet.

I got what Don was meaning! What a beauty there, Randy!! I just love those open tails and big butted girls of yours! Keep posting, if any is quiet, it's becaused they are awestruck! I noticed Miss Wheatie Pie watching one of my BCM hens laying today and kind of checking out the nest box. I...

Light Brown Leghorn? Light Brown Leghorn Bantam?

One would be Large Fowl, the other would be a Bantam. Bantams are usually just smaller versions of the large fowl. There should be several Leghorn threads on here to help you out more.

I Want a Silkie.. Do they have any special needs that other chickens dont?

Hi Lynette! Also, get at least two or three of them! Silkies like to be with their own kind, and because they need to pile up together to stay warm, it is a must. My other chickens don't even recognize them as chickens, and won't have anything to do with them, so they need friends of their own.

Donna ~ I was going to try to grow it in a kiddie pool and see what happens. Another thought I had was my neighbor's pond. He is plagued with algae in the summer, and duck weed is supposed to kill off the algae, plus the fish would benefit from it too. That would be ideal as his pond is right...

Mary ~ I don't use the medicated starter any more, I start them all out on a chick grower crumble, and the protein is only 21%. I will hard boil some eggs for them and mix it into their feed to up the protein, but I only do that a few times a week. When they get older I add some dry cat food...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

The copper should not extend down to the chest on BCMs or Wheatens. What you may be seeing in those roos, is cases of being over colored, or on the BCMs they are allowed like 10% of copper spotting on the breast. You don't see too many of the spotted breasts here in the states, but if you go to...
