I think I've solved my wood chips in the feeder problem at least. As long as the girls don't decide to try sitting on it, it should hold up and it's high enough from the floor that they don't kick much into it!

Thanks so much for all your replies! I'm so glad I asked! I guess free ranging the girls is probably not the right option in this particular case. Now I'll be looking closer into Plan B: chicken tunnels!

Okay guys I was sold this chick as a blue laced red wyandotte. After looking at some pictures I'm wondering if this is actually an australorp?? It's about 2 weeks old here. This is the first day they were brought home.
