Chicken coop and run on top of pallets as flooring

We dug a small trench around the small fenced run. Then mixed concrete and pored in. Nothing can dig through. Also, they have a fenced outer yard 25x25. We placed a metal pole in the middle and covered the top with landscaping netting. That was in 2021. Nothing has been able to fly in or dig...

No spill feeder - did your chicks understand it?

We installed our feeders and they were all eating from it within 4 days. We pulled feed from it toward the front so they could see it. Then we laid some feed under the feed spout to attract them. Then it was a matter of curiosity that had them wondering what the other chickens were after. I...

No spill feeder - did your chicks understand it?

Bigbluehen53: great idea! I also like the clover idea. I’m going to try both today. Two of the ladies found the feed but the others aren’t noticing yet.

Hi everyone. We moved our chicks to inside their hen house last week at 3 weeks old. Today we noticed we now have a cross beak Americana. I handled them often while in the house in their brooder. No cross beak then. She has been feeding fine. She looks well filled-out and feathering is good...

coop bedding- what do you prefer??

I tried the sand in the hen house and in the run and it was not a good idea. When driving rain came in through the windows and wet the sand it caused a terrible odor. We dragged out all we could and I added Sweet PDZ upstairs and in the run. Great stuff that Sweet PDZ. It works like a charm...

5 month old roosters and hens are beginning to stay inside hen house/roost during the day.

Update: We gave Roo 2 to a friend with 36 hens and no rooster. Needless to say he loves his new home. The smallest pullet laid the first egg of the group of 5 hens. The egg is about her size.....tiny! Now I see why the roo was mounting her. I thought it was because he was just, well...

5 month old roosters and hens are beginning to stay inside hen house/roost during the day.

I have one Roo who is either picking on the smallest hen or trying to mount her. My head Roo always comes to her rescue. I think it's 50/50 mount vs mean. One time he grabbed her wing though and Roo 1 got after him. It's always the same agitator. Maybe we should get rid of him? Thank you for...

5 month old roosters and hens are beginning to stay inside hen house/roost during the day.

My 5 hens and 3 roosters(accident) come down from the roost inside the hen house and into the run a daylight. But in the last 2 weeks they have begun to go back into the roost several times a day. If I go out there, they will come down. Most days they are put out into the yard and never...

Rooster goes in when hen lays eggs?

i have 5 hens and 3 Roos who never leave each others' side. They were all raised together. They are 4-1/2 months old. I was wondering if I should continue to house them all in the hen house at night and close out the Roos to the run? Or are they all suppose to sleep in the h. house? Just...

For the new folks that haven't experienced a molt yet.

Right! I would have done the same. I see a lot of feathers stuck to the inside fence of the run. I thought it was because of molting. Guess not. They are all still thickly feathered. After this experience I know I would be worried if I had seen this on one of them. I read also that the new...

How poisonous are tomato vines - WAS - Garden leavings...

My chickens are 8 weeks old. I just started giving them occasional fruit veggie treats. I have 8 so they have to share a lot. They eat tons of their chick starter as well. I am wondering if I am starting this at too young an age. I was sitting next to the enclosed run and one grabbed a...
