    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Here are our two first eggs. I think both our golden buffs are laying but have only caught one in the nesting box. We've been getting one to two eggs since last week. They are small but perfectly shaped.

Comb and wattles -- signifies about to lay?

I got my chickens the 1st of April and two of them (the golden buffs or red comets) are laying already. They've been laying one small egg each a day. It's so nice to go out and fetch the eggs! I can't wait until the eggs get bigger and the others start laying.

    Proud mama hen

I was getting kind of worried there, thinking I'd have to scoop them up every night and put them all to bed. Guess their instincts kicked in or they finally learned the routine. Whatever the case, I'm glad they learned, now if I can just get them to close the door and lock

    Proud mama hen

Well, I've been struggling to teach my 7week chicks how to get into their coop at night with no luck...until tonight. I came home late and found all of them on their roosts waiting for me to come and shut them in for the night. It was a proud moment.

    How early to give treats?

I've been giving my 6 meal worms since they were about 3 weeks old. They are now 6 weeks and they love cooked oatmeal and quinoa. I also toss in some swiss chard that I have in the garden and they ate all that up as well. Lettuce is a good one too. I put some yogurt in the oatmeal and they loved...

    What is a Golden Buff?

Hi-I've got two Golden Buffs and do not know much about them. The reason I got them is because the person who ordered the chicks had some and she told me they were her best layers and she really enjoyed their personalities. Are Golden Buffs the same breed as Buff Orpringtons?

Dominique chicks- Pics of my new babies!!

I've got two Dominiques in my family of 6 and they are my favorites. They are about 4 weeks old now and since day one the Dominiques have been the friendliest and smartest of the lot. I thought one of them was not going to make it so I had to giver her some extra special care...she's doing great...

    Healthy chicks at 4 weeks

Thanks everyone. I think they're cute too, but I'm biased;) The large dog crate/kennel worked out great but I know in a week or two they'll be outgrowing it. Will post some pics of the coop by the weekend. Hopefully, I'll have it painted by then!

    Healthy chicks at 4 weeks

Juliachick- would love to see your coop. I'll post some pics of ours as well. DH is not a master builder by any means but I think he's done a good job. The most important thing is that it's secure. When we're home we're building a run (probably the pvc type) to have them on the side of my house...

    Healthy chicks at 4 weeks

I just have the corners taped up with newspaper and masking tape. They do enjoy pecking at the paper but after a few minutes they give up. I just keep adding wood shavings to the bottom. I think they've been in there for a couple of weeks and I've cleaned the whole thing out a couple of times...

    Healthy chicks at 4 weeks

This is my first time raising chicks and I am so amazed at how well they are doing. They are getting bigger by the day and they just look great. They are active and alert and besides the mess they are making, are a joy to have as pets. I am very happy that I've made the move to have chickens...

Do These chicks look almost 5 weeks old?

Hi - Mine are three weeks old today and they are double the size of yours. I think maybe yours are only 2 weeks.

    Chicks afraid of the dark

Ha ha LilBizzy- that's too funny. I guess you gotta love their insecurities. It's not a coincidence that we get the term "chicken" and "chicken hearted" from them

    Chicks afraid of the dark

Yes, it's about 85 degrees in the house which I think is warm enough. They are pretty spread out when they sleep and not on top of one another. Last night they did fine without the heat lamp as well. If it gets cooler, which it just might, I'll put the lamp back up. They have seemed to calmed...

    Chicks afraid of the dark

Hi- I'm new here and my chicks are 3 weeks old. I just turned off the heating lamp last night as the temperature has been warm enough inside the house. We've had a heat wave and I don't think I'll need the heat lamp any further unless we get a cold spell. Some of the chicks are pretty well...
