I suppose it's time to stop lurking and do an intro, eh? smile.png
I'm located outside of Portland, OR and raise Russian Orloff. I also keep other breeds, including Black Mottled Turkey, but the Russian Orloff is my focus and my passion.
I am Secretary for the Russian Orloff Society for USA...
Their temperament is what drew me to owning them and eventually, breeding them. I have kids and I show my RO... They are calm, docile and very food motivated.
Being that they originated from Persia, but bred to the cold-hardy chickens of Russia, anywhere temperate to cold. It's been mentioned, there are successful breeders in Arizona and parts of Texas, so mindful ownership seems to be able to be accomplished in a varied temperature range as people...
I could be mistaken as I am not on the SOP committee, but I'm pretty sure that's the focus last I heard. If you have experience with the path to APA acceptance and own the breed, you should consider joining the Society and helping out.
Except white, is not, in the United States. It is an accepted color abroad, but there are no white LF Russian Orloff IN the US not to mention the SOP that is being worked on is concentrating on... Spangled. Hence my statement. Hopefully that clarifies what I was intending to say.
There are several breeders in Arizona with them. They much prefer it cold, but if you maintain kiddie pools and cool water, they seem to be successful. Mine pant when warm and the cold doesn't faze them. I'm in the PNW so we mostly have rain.
Also to address the white hen thing... No, white is not a sex-linked color. Hens do progressively (roosters too but they don't spangle like hens) whiten with each molt, so the older they are they whiter they can be. Some lines are white(r), but it is not an accepted color as a spangled Russian...
