Have you tried mashed cooked egg yolk or scrambled eggs? Yogurt could also help.

India Tree colors are pretty good, but they don't bake well.

I love the really old cookbooks. I have a few from the 30's and 40's but even by then they were doing food coloring. Butter does taste amazing in baked good. Also buttermilk! I love that stuff for my cakes lol.

It sounds like mulberry heart. Their hearts don't grow large enough so when they get too big for the small heart they get raspy and then die suddenly. I have not found literature on this, but I was told about this by a 30 year chicken farmer.

The shells from hard boiled eggs are best because when you peel them they are all crushed already. Otherwise dry the eggshells and then crush them.
