I initially started with deep litter method for my indoor birds, but found the dander to be too much. So we do pine shavings and I change them out just as they get to (or right before) they start to stink. That's about 1x week. If we have company coming over though I just make sure they have...

Thanks!! I will be sure to keep you posted. For now we are considering getting rid of the shavings all together. He is allergic to other woods do the pine may be attributing. Maybe. I'll let you all know what we do!!! We are out of town currently so I can't make any changes until we get back...

Well I'm no expert, maybe someone else can pipe in here and verify. But that's what I've been seeing. ;)

I believe from my research I've seen 1" x ½" is appropriate. And that the ½x½ their poo gets stuck on.

They are in the only spot available to them, which is along our wall between our entry way and our kitchen. Kitchens off to the right, so technically no, but pretty dang close.

Thanks Sill, I'm thinking of doing away with the deep litter bedding too. Just convert the cages to wire bottom. I personally wanted to give them the bedding vs the wire for foot care. :( sigh... but I am thinking that may be a route I have to take. Good idea on the two sets of greenery... I...

Sorry Yallapilko I missed over your message earlier I think my eyes just skipped right over it, apologies. They get plenty of air flow in it, their cages are designed so that they there is a 2.5" overhang on the back per cage. It's not an entirely enclosed box, just 2 walls and the doors. ;)...

That's not an option. I'm just looking for indoor solutions right now.

They get dust baths weekly already, I can up that two more frequently, but ina deep litter system i read that it really isn't required. But hey I could always try it out.

Ok folks, we keep a quail 'tower' indoors and are using the deep litter method, which has been fine thus far. The stink isn't too bad but the dander these birds produce is nearly unbearable. My poor husband is suffering through with allergy meds but I'd like to know if there is any way to keep...

Ok I'll be sure to keep that in mind! Maybe after I'm done going through all my old aquarium sand I'll get that. I'll be sure to get the non dusty one! I've got about 75lbs of sand on hand though! Lol...I think that should last me a good while.
