For those that see this and want to know...It appears 4 weeks is the most definite length of time.
I hav e three breeds of chickens...Leghorns, Buff Orps, and Silver Laced Wyn. I have a rooster for each breed. Currently they are all around 10 weeks old. Once they start laying I will be interested in continuing my flock by incubating & hatching my own eggs.
So how long do I need to...
Welcome to BYC. I am by now means an expert and I came across my knowledge by reading and doing. And I have come to the conclusion that this can be as simple or as grand as you want to make it.
As for predators, I live in South Carolina (just 30 min south of Charlotte) and predators have been...
Can you determine a breed just by looking at it? Any ideas on this rooster?
I lost my rooster and a couple of girls a week or so ago. I am looking to replace the roo so my remaining girls have some protection. This is a pix of a roo I am considering( off craigslist and I, yes, I have been...
I can vouch for Margarets Roost as well. I got a dozen from them last year. Very friendly and extremely helpful. I had a very nasty rooster that I had to get rid of and they sold me a full grown RIR to help protect my ladies. They are pretty much in my back yard.

Two weeks ago I successfully hatched my first home grown eggs. The new baby chicks are just starting to feather out. They are all sexlinks. I am thinking of starting my next round of incubation. If they were to hatch in 3 weeks, my first clutch will be 5 weeks old and not yet ready to join...
I am looking to go in with a chicken buddy and order some day old chicks since the min at this time of year is 25. Was your experience with McMurray good? Any suggestions when ordering form them?
My incubator was made out a cooler much like the Coleman 50qt wheeled cooler. I cut a square hole in the lid and used construction adhesive to glue the glass from an unused pix frame to the top. I went to a recycle center and they let me take an old computer that was dropped off. I took out...
I just had my first hatching....100% hatch rate. I don't have visions of every hatch being that successful, but this will give me a reason to try my hand at it again......
