I use the chick feeder that screws onto a 1 qt mason jar. I have 2 of those hanging in our brooder for 32 chicks and leave them for free choice. I also have a 1 gallon jug with poultry nipples on the bottom for water.
I usually fill both the food and water at least once a day (every 24...
Well, I did not think that the actual formula for Chicken math would strike me, but I got a small hit. Saturday, I found one of my barred rock chicks dead in the brooder. No apparent reason that I could see. Had not noticed any acting sick, slow or lethargic.
There was one Barred Rock the...
I looked at Save-a -Chick at one feed store and then ultimately decided to use Nutri-Drench and add sugar to that water solution. Now that they have been in the brooder for a little over 24 hours, I will start cutting back on the nutri-drench and sugar until we are on pure water.
This have be a great idea for the hatch drawers when I build by Refridgerbator.
I already have the egg turning trays and all the mechanics figured out, I had just not figured the easiest way to have hatching drawers in the bottom. Thanks for the idea.
Once I found about about Nutri-Drench and using sugar water (actually sugar water with nutri-drench in it) I start all of them on that as soon as they hit the brooder.
Sorry to hear about your little chick. Maybe it will pull through. You can get the Nutri-drench at TSC.
I did not read this entire thread, but the few that I did read I surmised that most of you are small timers. (No offense to anyone...) You guys went to get 3 chicks and ended up with 8 or ten. Well, my wife says my curse is doing things big....
She wanted chickens and took 7 adults that...

I just raised 19 that are now about 20 weeks old. Chick grit may be a good idea, but I did not know about it. They were on starter/grower crumble until about 16/17 weeks and I moved them to layer feed for about a week then to my own blend. Now, at 16 weeks, they started free ranging the...
If you have done everything you are supposed to do, provided the warmth, the water and food and the have the warm and cool zones to roam around in, they will be fine. My new little ones have been home in the brooder now for just over 24 hours. Put them in yesterday morning, settled them in and...
If it has only been an hour since the little ones were put out, that is not enough time. By night fall, she will have had most of the day with them and things will be a different story when she wakes up in the morning and the little ones are there. You just have to give them time. Also, make...
My chicks showed up this morning. Ordered 32, received 33 from McMurray and all are doing well. Honestly, I was expecting a few to be weak or even one or two doa (was hoping not but was prepared) and to my surprise, everyone was alive.
Brought them to the brooder that I had all ready and...
My order from McMurray arrived today. Got a call from the post office at 8:10 and immediately headed that way. To my suprise, all 32 were alive and looked very well. They shipped Tuesday. Got them home and mixed sugar and nutri drench in warm water and dipped each ones beak in it as they went in...
32 total chicks, mix of Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, White Rocks, and Delawares. I wish I would get a scan. It is possible they would be here in the am, but without a scan I have no idea...
Waiting on my birds this week as well. Mine left on Tuesday afternoon. I called the hatchery (McMurray) and they said that they drive them directly to the Airport either in Des Moines or so St. Paul. They unload from the truck directly to the plane.
My issue is that the tracking number says...
