Thanks for the reply, I think these don't necessarily have to be refrigerated as it's the chemical reaction in the gel itself that makes it cool, but can if you want them to cool down faster before you put it outside.(I know it'd probably only last a couple hours if that if used outside)
We...
Hi all,
Summers essentially here and in preparation I was wondering if anyone's tried the cooling gel pet beds made for dogs/cats to cool their chickens (for a few hours at least)? All I can find are the Mama Heating pads which I definitely don't need for summer :)
Below is an example of what...
Aw I just got 2 Easter eggers and one (accidental) Brahma a few weeks ago. We got them at about a week old:
Now they're just a little over 4 weeks. Can't wait to see what their final coloring turns out to be! They beige/greyish one is the sweetest little chick, she loves snuggling right under...
Hi all, I know there are a lot of posts on integrating and protecting existing flocks from adult chickens, and brooding chicks alongside existing flocks but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. Basically I'm wondering what do I need to do (if anything) to protect my existing...
Hi all! I had one mystery chick last year who I just could NOT tell what breed she was. The store said she should be Americana(Easter Egger) but all signs pointed to something else (yellow feet; single comb; no muff or beard; and uktimately pinkish brown eggs) I read through the breed...
Not to get your hopes up but I was one of the lucky ones that had suspect combs and wattles early on but still turned out to be a hen. That being said, 3 weeks is still pretty early for combs to get that red. I ended up keeping mine and monitoring her progress. Her face looked like a cockerel...
Thank you all so much for your responses. I have been putting out oyster shell since I was afraid they weren't getting sufficient calcium from starter alone but didn't want to risk the nonlayers eating layer feed.
Checked this morning and I got a normal egg with shell in our nesting boxes...
Hmm now I just peeked through the window and saw the smallest shelless egg on the ground. By the time I went outside they already popped it open.
Are multiple shelless eggs ok? I was planning on keeping them on starter until I finished but it's been a few weeks and I still have the one or two...
Ooh the mustard sounds like a good deterrent, thank you! I have 4 hens, 4 nesting boxes, but they all seem to like the one nesting box. Like you and oldhenlikesdogs said maybe I'll just spread around faux eggs to the other nesting boxes.
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I have 4 however my White Rock has been laying consistently in the nesting box and already had her egg today; my BSL hasn't started showing any egg laying behavior. They're all 19 weeks (more or less by a few days)
There are 4 nesting boxes but it seems they...
Hi all, I'm newish to chicken keeping and my girls are just starting to lay.
My SO and I went away on an overnight trip and came back late last night. I counted the chickens when I got back but didn't really check anything else until this morning. In the morning next to the door (not where I...
