I know this is an old post but i thought I’d add anyway because i was searching for answers for this for one of my young hens. I have spoken to a specialist avian vet and he has told me that it is excess calcium deposits (I've kept hens for years and never seen it before) and if she is well then...
are you leaving them long enough? i had some hatch a full 48 hours after the first.it could be the temp of the room they are in causing the incubator to fluctuate possibly. Ive used my broody to hatch eggs so am not experienced in practise with using an incubator so someone with more experience...
Just a quick update..... one of each, the boy started to develop the longer tail feathers and has now gone for breeding...lucky boy has already had two young pullets bought for him as friends😂 the girl is staying with me along with my two Indian Game chicks who both turned out to be girls 👍🏻All...
I had two definite boys earlier on who were heads down wings out and feet at each other so yeah this is more like what I have seen in my older birds when introducing new ones, didn’t realise it started quite so young lol!
That’s what I am hoping but sometimes their behaviour makes me unsure. When they get out in the big pen they get excited running around for a bit and run at each other (no feet up) do young pullets do that too? I’ve seen it when introducing new POL hens but I’ve never hatched my own before
Still umming and aaaaing over what sex my chickens are...Note to self, don’t hatch pea comb chicks again!! My Welsummer was sorted in 3 weeks and I’m still here feeding 4 other chicks 7 weeks later🙈2 Indian Game and 2 Lavender Araucanas (British standard not USA)
Here are latest pics of one of...
@TheOddOneOut what do you think about this pair ..... one is MUCH bigger than the other and hatched the same day so am thinking maybe one of each but Araucanas are so difficult! Any clues? The smaller chick is the one pictured sitting on the perch then there is a pic of the two of them side by...
It‘s constantly changing lol! I did have regular boxes in my old coop but i adapted this potting shed into a coop and couldnt get the boxes right and also wanted easily maintained. With these I can just unslot them from the wall for cleaning and they‘ll last forever. They‘re only held on the...
Mine prefer their nest boxes low but off the ground and the perches are higher, on several levels along with lots of perches in their enclosed pen for when they aren’t in the garden. I also have a dust bath, scratch area, mobile perch stand.
