I think they are too high....and need front lips 4-6" to keep bedding and egg in place....and you only need a couple nests for the few birds you have.We inherited this wonderful coop from my friends father and I’m wondering if the nesting boxes are too high or will work just fine? I haven’t seen a set up like this and I am new to chickens.
A distinct possibility.I’m also worried that since they are free range around the yard all day they may just lay their eggs under a bush somewhere. Yesterday and today I heard one of the ladies making all kinds of noise, but didn’t find an egg.
Free range birds sometimes need to be 'trained'(or re-trained) to lay in the coop nests, especially new layers. Leaving them locked in the coop for a week or so can help 'home' them to lay in the coop nests. Fake eggs/golf balls in the nests can help 'show' them were to lay. They can be confined to coop and maybe run 24/7 for a few days to a week, provided you have adequate space and ventilation, or confine them at least until mid to late afternoon. You help them create a new habit and they will usually stick with it. ..at least for a good while, then repeat as necessary.
Here's some tips on heights:

The coop is oddly wide open.I think that is where they are supposed to go in the winter to sleep?
