Guineas are tough, unforgiving birds. Just today, I brought home 5 young birds that are from my hens, my eggs...but were incubated off sight. My best hope is to eventually allow the groups to free range together, but i provide separate housing for the groups at night. It is easier for me to...
Very interesting indeed. My first batch of Guineas were mail order, hatched inthe mail. Only one hen remains from that group..she is .3 yrs old, and she was different fromthe start. Noticeably. Those birds got hit by cars, taken by haawks, and raccoons. Current flock was raised by a mama...
I went multiple routes this summer...watching nests, marking dates on eggs, and taking ALL the eggs at around 30 eggs? and sending them to incubators. this hen laid the eggs in a stall, that I could close off completely, inside of a secure barn, so I let her keep her nest. I have the door...
My hen hatched 16 keets a week ago. I have 9 adult birds also. I need to get SOME of those keets off of her and rehomed, so I was wondering if any had any advice on the best age to do that, and any tips on HOW to do it without getting the crap beat out of me...lol
She is doing a wonderful job...
Good question, I will keep an eye out here. My hen hatched 16 keets a week ago. I have 9 adult birds also. I need to get SOME of those keets off of her and rehomed, so I was wondering if any had any advice on the best age to do that, and any tips on HOW to do it without getting the crap beat...
I am watching my birds here in SW PA. I have 2 sets, one set of 2M, & 2F in a coop/run, and one set of 2M, 4 F free ranging. This arrangement is working to keep the free range birds closer to home. The coop birds are consistently producing 2 eggs a day, in the late afternoon.
However:

I have been getting a solo egg since mid february, from one
particular hen. Just discovered two nests, one with 22 eggs, one with 10. I have 6 hens ranging around...they have been busy. Live in sw penna.
I acquired a groups of three week old keets in july this year. I kept them inside their coop until october, when i added on an outside fenced/enclosed run for them. Now they go in and out freely, and have done well.
Three days ago, one bird managed to escape, and took up with 3 neighborhood...
I kept her in my łarger barn for a week. When i let her out, she disappeared. She has hooked up with the neighbors male and female and roosts w them. Getting 6 babies, and starting over this weekend.
Due to unforeseen, and unfortunate circumstances, I find myself the sad owner of just one guinea hen now. Two weeks ago, I had 4 adult hens, and two days ago, I was down to just 2. Last night I found my one solo hen in the coop. (the others were not picked off by predators, but pick up...
So i have these 45 eggs that mum sat on fior 5 nights. I moved them and she abandoned them. Is there any salvage to them or should i Carefully dispose of them?
If you move the nest from outside, to inside, along with the hen that had been sitting for about 6 days, what are the chances she will sit again faithfuly? Or should i get a chicken to help? Or jyst pitch the eggs? I found 45 today, and moved them in the coop. So far mom isnt liking this idea...?
I do not think they can count, and u will probably never outsmart them either, they do what they want. My birds are coming 3 yrs old...4 hens left of 8 originally. I found a nest afew weeks ago, had 13 eggs in it. I took the number to 10, marked them with a sharpie, and collected 4'new eggs...
