Has anyone here mixed the genetics of meat birds with layers?

Thank you for all of the info. I hadn't thought about the fat situation with hens vs roosters. We feed them all layer feed because they were raised by an egg layer and we kept them within the egg laying flock. Once we found out we had several roosters, we just decided we should eat them. We...

What is the best way to rid chickens of lice? Saw some crawling on eggs, so I decided to check a hen and she had a lot of clear looking bugs walking around...

Has anyone here mixed the genetics of meat birds with layers?

We butchered some roosters we had and they had basically zero fat. Fully free range, so maybe that's the reason, but they were cochin / olive egger mix. We were thinking maybe we should introduce a meat bird rooster with the layers since we don't want to have a completely separate flock of just...

    Rehabbing Duck

We had her on anti inflammatory drugs and vitamins of course. This week I actually gave her to my mother-in-law which will be her permanent home and she is continuing the meds and I believe she was going to get antibiotics for her.

    Rehabbing Duck

She is doing really well. Definitely getting more energy. Her legs are still swollen looking, but I don't think she will ever recover fully with her legs.

    Rehabbing Duck

She doesn’t have bumblefoot but she does have scabs where her hocks are touching the ground. She is honestly getting around fairly well and seems to have a lot of life in her. Do you know how long I should leave her in the bathtub when it’s full of water?

    Rehabbing Duck

I don’t think she has slipped tendons. Both hocks are swollen like that. I think they were feeding her chicken feed too. I filled the tub with water and she laid an egg. It was super small and no yolk. That seems like it would be a connection to deficiency ?

    Rehabbing Duck

So you would recommend this over buying pure niacin capsules to add into her food?

    Rehabbing Duck

I would say it's a combo of not caring too much and just neglect in the situation. Some people unfortunately just view these animals as a product and in this case she was an egg layer. I just don't know how you could let this go on for a even a short period. This has to be a longer period of...

    Rehabbing Duck

Thank you so much for all of the info. I am used to caring for chickens, so waterfowl is out of my territory. I will def look into all of these things to hopefully get her feeling better soon.

    Rehabbing Duck

I rescued this female duck. She was being abused by the two males. The owners only have two males and two females! Anyways, she is unable to walk on her feet so she hobbles on her hocks, legs splayed and hocks very swollen. She is also missing feathers on her head, neck and body. Has a slightly...

Not sure what was wrong with my Hen

My buff Orpington, approx 10 months old started to act a bit strange. I found her hiding and not with her flock and chicks per usual. We just lost a chick but unsure what happened to it. Probably a predator. My hens freely roam the acreage. I knew something was wrong then when she allowed me to...
