You're right - I don't have any pics of those since they were added much later, after the girls were old enough to lay.
But I just use 3 kitty litter boxes - I've tried other things, but the litter boxes are by far their favorites (I think because it's dark inside). Oh, and pine straw for...
Thank you! The coop is holding up great - the windows could use a good cleaning now - something I'll do when it cools off a bit this fall.
The formica-type board I used for the poop deck collapsed - I suspect that several birds jumped on it at the same time. They were probably using it as a...
The coop is holding up great - but it's positioned under a large pavilion, so it doesn't get much direct rain on the roof. The north side gets the full winter force, and it looks as good as new. Now it just needs a good cleaning to get the dust off the windows - something that will have to wait...
I had a customer forget to pick up her eggs yesterday - they were in clear plastic crates and sat in the sun for about 6 hours - temps got up to 85. I refrigerated them when I brought them in. She wants to pick them up today - are they safe to eat? Or should I dump them?
BTW - for anyone living in the D/FW area, I got my new chickens from a ranch in Terrell called CC Lacey Ranch. They have over 1800 chickens and I was blown away by how clean ALL the coops/pens were. (they hire men specifically to keep the coops clean) They were divided by breed and age and...
That would have been my first thought too, except the new girls are too young (9 and 15 weeks) and aren't laying yet. It must have been one of my older gals. :(
Thanks so much for all your replies. I was just puzzled by the location of the eggs. Usually, the eggs are all in a clutch in the center of the nesting box (in a depression in the straw), along with 2 fake plastic eggs. But all 4 of the real eggs had been pushed up under the front lip, in a line...
Also... (forgot to mention) I just purchased 7 new hens and a full-grown rooster yesterday. I had to isolate and separate them due to age/size differences, so I had to put the rooster and 3 older girls (15 weeks) in the coop with the possible snake problem.
Do you think these chickens are...
And is it possible to tell?
My chickens have never eaten their own eggs and they free range 2X a day. I'd been suspecting that I had snakes inside the coop, since I recently saw a huge rat snake crawl off the roof and (just a couple of days ago) saw a small rat snake inside the coop. I've...
This was posted in the Walter T. Kelley newsletter - Kelley Bee News Modern Beekeeping - this month:
Apitherapy: Apilarnil
Apilarnil is an acronym:
• Api – bee
• lar for larvae
• n for Nicolae, the first name of the man who discovered Apilarnil, and
• il the two initials for the...
Joan - she's so much better. I think the epsoms salts did the trick! The swelling is gone, color is normal, and there's now a small scab near the nail (no bleeding!) Her comb & wattles are still pale, but I think even those look better.
She chose to stay in the hoop coop the first day after...
Since I took the bandage off, her foot is still bleeding quite a bit.
I soaked it for 15 minutes and it seems the bleeding may be slowing down. When she walks on it, it starts bleeding.
She was completely calm - seemed to like watching TV - so the time went pretty fast! (I did get strange...
